This calculator determines how much sugar (in mg/kg/min) an infant is receiving.

Enter the infant’s weight, then specify the various inputs:

  • dextrose percentage and flow rate for one or two infusions
  • type of milk and hourly milk volumes
  • added polycal (or equivalent carbohydrate) in grams per 100 ml of milk.

    Assumptions:
    Breast milk sugar content   7.1 g / 100 ml
    Term formula sugar content   7.1 g / 100 ml
    Pre-term formula sugar content   8.5 g / 100 ml

    Any newborn requiring a glucose load of 10 mg/kg/minute to maintain normoglycaemia should be investigated for hyperinsulinism.
